The Tubes: San Francisco Band Blending Rock and Comedy.

Staff Report / sanfranlocal.org

The Tubes, a band from San Francisco, was formed in 1972 by merging two bands from Phoenix, Arizona. Their debut self-titled album in 1975 gained attention for their eccentric stage shows with props and costumes. Hits like "White Punks on Dope" and "What Do You Want From Life?" brought them early success. The Tubes blended genres and mixed rock, comedy, and performance art with bands like DEVO and The Residents. Band members included Fee Waybill, Prairie Prince, Bill Spooner, Vince Welnick, Re Styles, and Jane Dornacker. Dornacker is also known for her band Leila and the Snakes. The Tubes found further success in the early 1980s with their hit song "She's a Beauty" and made a cameo in the movie Xanadu. Materials related to The Tubes can be found at the San Francisco History Center. Highlights from the SF Punk Archive can be found each Friday.
