FDNY Remembers 1978 Waldbaum's Fire; Six Firefighters Killed. (source: FDNY)

On August 2, 1978, a devastating fire engulfed a Waldbaum's supermarket in Brooklyn, New York. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of six firefighters from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The fire took the lives of Lt. James E. Cutillo, Firefighter Charles S. Bouton, Harold F. Hastings, Firefighter James P. McGanus, Firefighter William O'Connor, and Firefighter George S. Rice.

During the fire, 12 firefighters were caught in the flames when the supermarket's center section collapsed while nearly 20 members were on the roof. The incident also caused injuries to 34 firefighters, one emergency medical technician, and one NYPD emergency services police officer. The FDNY considers this fire one of the worst in its history, remembering the sacrifice made by these courageous individuals on that tragic day.
