As the winter holiday season approaches, safety precautions regarding fire hazards are being highlighted by the U.S. Fire Administration. Reports indicate that more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles.

To prevent these fires, it is recommended to keep candles at least 12 inches away from any flammable materials. This includes items such as decorations, wrapping paper, and furniture.

Additionally, the use of battery-operated flameless candles is encouraged as a safer alternative to traditional candles.

Sarasota County Emergency Services is urging residents to be vigilant and fire smart while decorating for the holidays.
