Columbus Fire Recruits Complete Ladder Climb Training
Staff Report / cbuslocal.org
The Columbus Division of Fire reports that the recruit class 121 Blue Company completed their ladder climb on Friday, November 8. This exercise was a part of the Ladder Operations training within the 32-week curriculum at the Columbus Fire Training Academy.
During the ladder climb, recruits practiced using aerial and platform ladders, along with ground ladders. Each recruit is required to ascend ladders that reach heights of 100 feet and are tilted at a steep 70-degree angle. This training aims to build confidence for tasks performed at significant heights, which are often necessary during multi-story structure fires or rescues.
Aside from ladder operations, recruits will also train in engine operations, fire ground operations, emergency medical services, and building inspections before graduating.
Recruit Caleb Walker shared his feelings about the experience, mentioning some nerves beforehand but ultimately describing it as fun and exciting. He credited the instructors for adequately preparing him for the challenge.
The recruits from class 121 are set to graduate on December 20 and will then be assigned to one of the 34 fire stations in Columbus to serve the local communities.
