Exploring Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs)
Staff Report / LAXlocal.org
**What is a MEHKO?**
A Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) is a small-scale, home-based restaurant that is regulated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The department is responsible for issuing permits for MEHKOs in the County, except in the cities of Pasadena, Long Beach, and Vernon, where local health departments manage the permitting process.
MEHKOs can offer a variety of food items, including a main dish, appetizers, side dishes, beverages, baked goods, and desserts. All food must be prepared, cooked, and served or delivered on the same day.
A MEHKO is limited to selling up to 30 meals per day and no more than 90 meals per week, with an annual sales limit of $100,000.
For those interested in starting a MEHKO, more information and potential subsidies are available through the Los Angeles County public health website.
