UF Leads Engineering Opportunities for Students in Sarasota

Staff Report / NPlocal.org

Over the summer, there were numerous engineering learning opportunities available in the Sarasota area. The University of Florida collaborated with local teachers and community organizations to provide camps, workshops, and professional development sessions.

In early June, North Port High School engineering instructor Ken Jakoby and Pine View School engineering instructor Drew Wormington participated in a week-long training in Gainesville focused on engineering for wind hazards at Powell Family Structures and Materials Lab. The training was organized and led by UF Assistant Professor of Engineering Education Dr. Jeremy Waisome, aiming to help teachers integrate hands-on engineering projects into their classrooms.

Additionally, more than 40 middle school students in Sarasota County participated in the Goldberg Gator Engineering Explorers summer camp. Led by teachers Alister Munroe and Arielle Wickstrom, the students engaged in engineering design challenges like creating a miniature carwash for Hotwheels with guidance from UF engineering student intern Layth Ghnaim.

In July, Unidos Now students took part in an engineering workshop led by UF biomedical engineering instructor Dr. Ana Porras and her graduate research assistants. The workshop focused on the engineering design process and creative problem-solving to address complex biomedical engineering challenges.

For more information on K-12 opportunities offered by UF, interested individuals can contact Julee Breehne at jbreehne@eng.ufl.edu. Those looking to partner with the UF Innovation Station Sarasota County for engineering internships can reach out to Ann Marie Chupa at amchupa@eng.ufl.edu.
