Brighton Police Warn of Phone Scam Risks

Staff Report / Brightonlocal.org

Brighton Police Department in Brighton, Colorado, has issued a scam alert as they continue to receive reports of scammers posing as police department or sheriff's office representatives. These scammers are reaching out to individuals over the phone and asking for money. The Brighton Police Department emphasizes that they will never request money in any form over the phone.

If residents receive any calls or messages requesting money, they are advised to hang up and report the incident by calling 303-288-1535. It is important to note that scammers can disguise their phone numbers to appear legitimate.

The police department wants to remind the public of four common signs of a scam:

1. The caller pretends to be from a known organization.

2. The caller mentions a problem or a prize.

3. The caller pressures the recipient to act quickly.

4. The caller instructs the recipient on a specific payment method.

To protect themselves from scams, residents are encouraged to take several precautions:

1. Block unwanted calls and text messages. If a number appears valid, hang up and contact the organization directly for verification.

2. Avoid sharing personal information in response to unexpected requests.

3. Do not succumb to pressure to act immediately.

4. Be wary of payment methods suggested by scammers, such as Coinstar.

5. Speak with a trusted individual if in doubt.
