Community Program Celebrates Legacy of David D. Powell

Staff Report / jaxlocal.org

The Jacksonville Public Library is hosting a community program this November, focused on the significant contributions of David Daniel Powell, a notable yet often overlooked Black leader in the local community. Powell played a vital role in guiding the Black community through numerous challenges over nearly 50 years, including two pandemics, two World Wars, and the Great Depression, while also leading the Grand Lodge and informally governing LaVilla.

The program, titled "History Chat: The Case for David D. Powell," will take place on Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m. in the Ansbacher Map Room of the Main Library. Attendance is free, and registration is available at jaxlibrary.org/historychat. The event will feature a 40-minute presentation followed by a 20-minute question and answer session for the audience.

The guest speaker for this event is Jerry Urso, the Grand Historian for The Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge of Florida. Urso, originally from Massachusetts, holds a master’s degree in history from Trinity College. He comes from a family with a strong Masonic background and has received a Fellowship to the Phylaxis Society, which focuses on educating the public about Prince Hall and the Masonic network stemming from The African Lodge of Boston, established in 1775. This program is made possible through a grant from the Mellon Foundation.
